- BUDDHA
- ('awakened one') a completely enlightened being; originally referring to the historical Shakyamuni Buddha (563-483 BC), founder of Buddhism, the term came to include numerous historical figures.
- BODHISATTVA
- (from Sanskrit bodhi, enlightenment; sattva, being) an altruistic being dedicated to the enlightenment of all other beings; being who has put off entering nirvana to help other souls achieve release.
- BRAHMA
- the god of creation; one of the three principle gods of Hinduism and a member of the Hindu trimurti (trinity); usually depicted with four arms and four faces, through which he authored the four Veda.
- BAYON
- Buddhist temple constructed by King Jayavarman VII (1181 - 1218) at the center of Angkor Thom.
- BHUMISPARSHA-MUDRA
- the 'Earth-touching' mudra or gesture symbolizing the Buddha calling the earth to witness his victory over Mara.
- BODHI
- 'enlightenment' achieved through the combination of compassion (karuna) and wisdom (prajna); the ultimate stage of consciousness.
- BRONZE
- alloy of metals including copper and tin.
- BUDDHISM
- religion founded in the sixth century B.C. by the Buddha (enlightened) Shakyamuni (sage of the Sakya clan); he preached a nonviolent way of life, one that was respectful of all living things and that used meditation as the basic path to salvation.
- BARADARI
- rectangular or square pavilion with a tripartite arcade or colonnade on each of its sides; more generally, a summer-house.
- BODH GAYA
- traditional site of the Buddha's Enlightenment, in northeastern India.
- BODHI TREE
- tree under which the Buddha meditated at the moment of enlightenment, traditionally believe to be at Bodh Gaya.
- BYOBU
- folding screen; used for the division of space and for decoration; an important vehicle for painting in Japan.
